Nikita's wish was one of six granted across the country Links of London Sale . Wishes are given to children ages 2 1/2 to 18 years old with life-threatening illnesses. The average cost of a wish is $3,400. In the past year, which ended Aug. 31, the local chapter has granted 697 wishes. "We have to believe for these kids, and what better time than this time of year to believe in the magic that good things will happen for Nikita," said Dana Antkowiak, marketing and communications coordinator for Make-A-Wish. "Each kid's wish is as unique as the child itself. This is my favorite part of my job, being here, seeing this wish come true and just seeing Nikita's face." Nikita was born premature and had some speaking problems. She had several operations on her mouth and has some vision problems from lazy eyes. She also has a seizure disorder. Nikita and her family members -- mother Jennifer Katana, 18-month-old brother Isaiah Katana, Aunt Marla Brumbaugh and Grandmother Sheryl Ingram -- arrived at Macy's Downtown store in a black stretch Links of London Earrings a bit after 10 a.m. Inside, they were greeted with signs proclaiming Nikita the princess. She was presented with a bouquet of colorful flowers, a tiara and a pink princess sash, then whisked away to a third-floor dressing room to be fitted in her outfit. "I like this," said Nikita, as she exited the dressing room. "This is cool." A first-grader at George Washington Elementary School in McKeesport, Nikita's wish was to be a princess and to have her bedroom turned into a castle. That part of the wish is expected to be completed by the end of the month. She will have a new bed and dresser with roses carved into them and a crown on top. The ceiling will be painted to represent the sky, and one wall will picture an enchanted forest, says Remy Bibaud, a volunteer with Make-A-Wish. "The best part is to see these kid's faces," said Bibaud, who has been helping to grant wishes for 14 years. "Look, she is the perfect princess." Links of London Sale organizations

Frederica Academy students are reaching out locally and Links of London Sale to help others this Christmas season. Ninety-one sixth- through eighth-grade students wrote letters to soldiers in Afghanistan and brought in gifts, such as hand lotion, lip balm, hats and hand warmers to be delivered before Christmas. Students also spoke Thursday through Skype, computer software for free video and voice calls around the world, with soldiers in Afghanistan. Six students read their letters to the soldiers, thanking them for their service. Lizzie Love, a sixth-grader who read her letter to the two soldiers listening and watching on the computer, said she is lucky there are people like them so that she can feel safe. "I am so grateful for you," she read. After the letters were read, students were able to ask questions, such as if the soldiers always have to wear their uniforms -- they do -- and how the food is -- not bad, but no fresh fruit. "It makes me feel really good," said Chad Sharp, 12, about giving to others. In addition to writing a letter and bringing in gifts for soldiers, Links of London Earrings also volunteers at the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia and helped unload grocery bags for Second Harvest food bank. "Every once in a while there are ways we can help the community," Chad said. It's more than that, though. Deirdre Byers, the Frederica Academy school nurse and community service adviser, said she's seen a tremendous response from children and families wanting to help out this holiday season. "The generosity of this school is overwhelming this Christmas," she said. "Everyone wants to participate." She said more people are helping this year than ever before. "It's like this virus has spread," she said. "I think that your basic human nature is to help other human beings. When you don't do it, you feel like something is missing in your life." Throughout December, Frederica Academy students have adopted 10 local families and provided Christmas presents; held a food drive for Sparrow's Nest food bank, which generated about 1,400 Links of London O Charm or boxed foods; collected boys clothing and shoes, gift cards and cash for a family of seven in Darien whose house burned; and donated books for Amity House, a women's shelter. It's great to have someone understand when you go for a run Links of London Sale it's 30 degrees out."While Giza captured his first men's title in the series, Allison Carr won the women's championship for the second straight year and sixth year overall.Giza was 8 or 9 when he ran his first road race, and he did so only by accident. He and his father signed up for a mile fun run at a 5-kilometer race at Frontier High School. But they were late and missed the start of the shorter event, so they ran the full distance instead.After spending some time in middle school playing soccer, Giza switched sports when he arrived at Lancaster High School."My dad suggested I try out for cross country," he said. "When I tried that, I was taking second or third in lots of races. The more I did, the better I did, so I kept at it."Giza was recruited to run for UB and received a partial scholarship."I had some injuries along the way, but I had some good times," he said. "I have the school record in 3,000 [meters]. That's my best event."Graduation came in 2008. When he's not running, Giza works as a product engineer in the space and defense division at Moog, working on valves.After recovering from a foot injury, Giza won the Shoes for the Links of London Necklaces race in The News series in April, and a month later finished second in the Grand Island Half-Marathon. Giza said he felt great by July, and overall had seven top-three finishes in series events."I would have liked to have been more consistent," he said. "[Second-place finisher] Chris Walters had a great year. I definitely would have liked to have been contending a lot more, but I had a fairly good year and hopefully I can do even better in the future."Veith is going to let her future husband do most of the racing for the time being."She still runs every day. She's really in good shape," Giza said. "But she's ready to take a break. She's a part-time teacher, and she's going to school for her master's."The one thing we're trying to find for our wedding is running figures that are wedding-cake toppers. We're having a tough time finding them."Carr wasn't happy with her season even though she was again dominant."I didn't think I was where I should be," she said. "I was coming back from a lot of stuff at the start of the year, but I had no energy at the start of the summer. I felt better after that and made some progress in a couple of races."Carr won four races in the series, including two 10K events."I'm taking it one day at a time," she said.
