It's great to have someone understand when you go for a run Links of London Sale it's 30 degrees out."While Giza captured his first men's title in the series, Allison Carr won the women's championship for the second straight year and sixth year overall.Giza was 8 or 9 when he ran his first road race, and he did so only by accident. He and his father signed up for a mile fun run at a 5-kilometer race at Frontier High School. But they were late and missed the start of the shorter event, so they ran the full distance instead.After spending some time in middle school playing soccer, Giza switched sports when he arrived at Lancaster High School."My dad suggested I try out for cross country," he said. "When I tried that, I was taking second or third in lots of races. The more I did, the better I did, so I kept at it."Giza was recruited to run for UB and received a partial scholarship."I had some injuries along the way, but I had some good times," he said. "I have the school record in 3,000 [meters]. That's my best event."Graduation came in 2008. When he's not running, Giza works as a product engineer in the space and defense division at Moog, working on valves.After recovering from a foot injury, Giza won the Shoes for the Links of London Necklaces race in The News series in April, and a month later finished second in the Grand Island Half-Marathon. Giza said he felt great by July, and overall had seven top-three finishes in series events."I would have liked to have been more consistent," he said. "[Second-place finisher] Chris Walters had a great year. I definitely would have liked to have been contending a lot more, but I had a fairly good year and hopefully I can do even better in the future."Veith is going to let her future husband do most of the racing for the time being."She still runs every day. She's really in good shape," Giza said. "But she's ready to take a break. She's a part-time teacher, and she's going to school for her master's."The one thing we're trying to find for our wedding is running figures that are wedding-cake toppers. We're having a tough time finding them."Carr wasn't happy with her season even though she was again dominant."I didn't think I was where I should be," she said. "I was coming back from a lot of stuff at the start of the year, but I had no energy at the start of the summer. I felt better after that and made some progress in a couple of races."Carr won four races in the series, including two 10K events."I'm taking it one day at a time," she said. The second through 10th finishers in the overall standings as well as the top three age-group finishers will receive certificates of achievement.
