Links of London Sale organizations

Frederica Academy students are reaching out locally and Links of London Sale to help others this Christmas season. Ninety-one sixth- through eighth-grade students wrote letters to soldiers in Afghanistan and brought in gifts, such as hand lotion, lip balm, hats and hand warmers to be delivered before Christmas. Students also spoke Thursday through Skype, computer software for free video and voice calls around the world, with soldiers in Afghanistan. Six students read their letters to the soldiers, thanking them for their service. Lizzie Love, a sixth-grader who read her letter to the two soldiers listening and watching on the computer, said she is lucky there are people like them so that she can feel safe. "I am so grateful for you," she read. After the letters were read, students were able to ask questions, such as if the soldiers always have to wear their uniforms -- they do -- and how the food is -- not bad, but no fresh fruit. "It makes me feel really good," said Chad Sharp, 12, about giving to others. In addition to writing a letter and bringing in gifts for soldiers, Links of London Earrings also volunteers at the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia and helped unload grocery bags for Second Harvest food bank. "Every once in a while there are ways we can help the community," Chad said. It's more than that, though. Deirdre Byers, the Frederica Academy school nurse and community service adviser, said she's seen a tremendous response from children and families wanting to help out this holiday season. "The generosity of this school is overwhelming this Christmas," she said. "Everyone wants to participate." She said more people are helping this year than ever before. "It's like this virus has spread," she said. "I think that your basic human nature is to help other human beings. When you don't do it, you feel like something is missing in your life." Throughout December, Frederica Academy students have adopted 10 local families and provided Christmas presents; held a food drive for Sparrow's Nest food bank, which generated about 1,400 Links of London O Charm or boxed foods; collected boys clothing and shoes, gift cards and cash for a family of seven in Darien whose house burned; and donated books for Amity House, a women's shelter. Lower school children are also collecting books and toys for organizations like Healthy Families and Babies Can't Wait, while high school students will be volunteering Saturday at the CASA Jingle Bell Run and ringing bells for the Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign.Black sequin shoes, crisp white gloves, fluffy cape.
