Although LeDoyt sometimes kids the promoter it's his red-headed guitar player, it's actually LeDoyt -- the fella dressed like "a slob" with his brown hair down around his eyes and in need of a good shave. Then, of course, LeDoyt transforms himself from a regular dude into the King at his early hip-shaking, lip-quivering best. To pull off the transformation, LeDoyt turns to a razor for his whiskers and Murray's Pomade for his hair. "Boy, it's nasty stuff," LeDoyt said of the valentine's Day rings. "It's petroleum-jelly-based, so it will take a week to get out of my hair. That's why I hate putting it in. But it gives it that greasy look, where you can style it in a pompadour." When he's finished, LeDoyt's hair is both stiff and sticky. "Sometimes, the ladies in the audience will make the mistake of grabbing my hair," he said, "then you see them go, 'Ugh. What the heck?' " As for makeup, LeDoyt relies on it to, among other things, replicate the dark circles under a young Presley's eyes. For his stage costume, LeDoyt often wears two-tone shoes, black pants, a black blazer and a black shirt paired with a pink tie. I don't go with such a flashy thing. I wear something subtle that he wore." Beyond the physical aspects of becoming Elvis in his prime, LeDoyt said, "The hardest part of the show is living up to everyone's expectations of what Elvis was." There are times when LeDoyt wonders how long he'll continue meeting those high expectations. "I actually was going to retire a year ago. I said I'm going to try something else, but so many fans said, 'Please don't stop.' And I still enjoy it." Or I could play all of my songs. Then I could repeat my songs if I wanted. I was like, 'This sounds great because you're not expecting anything from me. I can just have fun with it.' I thought that was the perfect environment for my first show." Paulus continues to make art; his work is on view at Automatic Slim's downtown. He included some of pieces in "The Price is Right" show last August at David Lusk Gallery. " Playing his music at shows is fun because it's a new experience, Paulus said. He's shaking it while he's playing the bass drum with his left foot, the guitar with his hands and, when he's not singing, a harmonica with his mouth. His real name is Alexander Paulus. His friend, photographer Tam Tran, came up with his stage name. "I have a beard and she thought I looked like a lumberjack," said Paulus, 30. "She was like regular valentine's Day rings and I said, 'Why don't I call it 'Bunion' like the foot problem because I play instruments with my feet?'" Paulus uses his real name as an art professor at Memphis College of Art and Southwest Community College. A native of Perryville, Mo., Paulus grew up drawing. He got his bachelor of fine arts in painting at Southeast Missouri State University. After he graduated, he worked in frame shops in St. Louis for a couple of years. He played guitar before he moved to St. Louis, but he got serious after he got a four-track recorder for Christmas and wrote and recorded his first song, "I Got a Woman," a "slide blues riff kind of song." Paulus had two tambourines fastened to his size 91/2 shoe at one point, but one of the tambourines eventually broke. While he's shaking his Tambyshoe, Paulus' left foot is busy playing the bass kick drum. So, now I play the bass with my left foot. It's kind of backwards." The only thing Paulus wears on his left foot is a sock.
